JazzCash & Easypaisa Scams: How Fraudsters Empty Mobile Wallets in Pakistan
JazzCash and Easypaisa are used by tens of millions of Pakistanis to send money, pay bills and receive salaries, so fraudsters target them relentlessly. The most common tricks are fake 'account verification' calls where a caller posing as JazzCash or Easypaisa staff asks for your PIN or the OTP just sent to you; fake 'you've won a prize' messages; and the 'wrong transfer' scam where someone sends a fake credit SMS and begs you to return money you never received. Once a scammer has your OTP, they can re-register your wallet on their own phone and drain it in minutes.

Warning Signs of a JazzCash or Easypaisa Scam
- ⚠A caller claims to be from JazzCash, Easypaisa, Telenor, Jazz or the State Bank and says your account will be blocked unless you 'verify'
- ⚠You're asked to share your MPIN, the 4–6 digit code sent by SMS, or to dial a USSD code they give you
- ⚠An SMS says you received Rs 5,000–Rs 20,000, followed by a call asking you to 'return the mistaken transfer' — but your actual wallet balance hasn't changed
- ⚠The 'credit' message comes from a regular 03xx number, not the official JazzCash or Easypaisa sender
- ⚠You're told you've won a lucky draw, iPhone or cash prize and must pay a 'tax' first
How Does This Scam Work?
- 1The scammer contacts you by call, SMS or WhatsApp, often using a profile picture with the JazzCash or Easypaisa logo
- 2They create urgency: your account is about to be blocked, you've won a prize, or they 'mistakenly' sent you money
- 3They ask for your MPIN or the one-time code, or pressure you to send money back from your own balance
- 4With your OTP they log into your wallet on another device and change your PIN
- 5Your balance is moved to other wallets or bank accounts within minutes and cashed out through agents
